If you are always repeating a maintenance job, it might be best to look at other more cost-effective options. Food factory flooring is often a solution that many companies spend too much time trying to get right. Many choose the DIY Floor paint option when really it’s not up to the job. Whilst at first it may appear to be the low-cost option, over a period of time the costs of materials and labour can add up. Here at PSC Flooring, as leading industrial flooring contractors, we can help you find the perfect food grade flooring, at the best price.
Not up to standard
PSC Flooring were called in by Island Seafood of Dagenham, a busy fish processing and dispatching plant, to look at their floor. After our team of industrial flooring experts inspected it, it was clear that their current food factory flooring was not up to standard.
The existing floor had seen better days with layers of failing floor paint. The client was specific about their needs for the floor. They were requiring it to be a hard-wearing floor throughout that could take the wear and tear of van traffic. They were also needing it to have the ability to be easily cleaned down daily.
6mm RT Screed system – Just the job for food factory flooring
Recommending a 6mm RT Screed for their food factory flooring was due to its hardwearing nature. It has the ability to withstand the hardest physical abrasions. Trowel-finished, 6mm RT Screed flooring is classed as medium to heavy duty.
It has an anticipated life of 10 to 12 years if used for regular foot traffic, frequent forklift truck traffic, occasional hard plastic-wheeled trolleys. The main advantage of polyurethane screed in the food industry is that 6mm RT Screed floors are hygienic. They are seamless, impervious and do not support microbial growth.
Ideal for wet processing areas
Polyurethane screeds offer the maximum chemical protection of all resin products. In fact, they can easily withstand exposure to the numerous acids and chemicals that the fish processing area uses. Complemented by coving and render to allow for a smooth transition from wall to floor, heavy-duty polyurethane screed floors are easy to clean. At the same time, providing a seamless “box” finish for high sterile processes in the food industry. You can jet wash a polyurethane 6mm screed down every day, with a built-in anti-slip area supporting this. This makes it ideal for a potentially wet environment such as a fish processing plant.
Fit for purpose
Before laying down their new food safe flooring, we began with diamond grinding the floor surface. This helped us with removing the failing floor paint.
Applying a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) to begin with prevents any residual damp in the floor from rising. Saw cuts were installed around the drain and door thresholds to enable the 6mm resin screeds to lay flush with the drain and the doorway. The 6mm RT Screed was then laid in the main processing area and the changing rooms. The clients chose a Chelsea blue colour with colour matched coving throughout.
Overall the job was completed in just 2 days. The client is very happy with the new food grade flooring saying, “PSC Flooring have done a fantastic job, giving us a floor that is now fit for purpose that will last – thank goodness no more twice-yearly floor painting”
