Drywall is a type of construction material used to create walls and ceilings in both domestic and commercial settings. There are many benefits to the material but the most appealing factors are:
- The material is easy to install
- It is incredibly durable
- It is also very easy to maintain
With the above factors in mind, drywall is one of the most popular construction materials to use in residential and commercial property. When it comes to commercial buildings, it’s likely that you’ll be having visitors so it’s important that your drywall remains visually pleasing. Therefore, a technique called skim coating is perfect for creating an appropriate finish on your wall or ceiling. Read on to find out why.
What Is Skim Coating?
Put simply, skim coating is a finishing technique. It is used to smooth out the wall or to repair damaged cracks, that are interfering with the overall finish of your drywall. Furthermore, it is one of the quickest solutions for repairing minor cracks or levelling out surfaces.
How Do You Do It?
Firstly, if you are considering skim coating your drywall, to begin with you will need to prep the surface. Any nails or loose bits of paint or plaster will need to be removed. In addition, you will need to clean the wall too with a duster and a damp cloth if there are any marks.
Next, you should apply a water-based sealer to the wall. This is because skim coats are only effective on matte or primed surfaces. You should then prep and mix a joint compound, with a small amount of the chosen colour you want your wall to be. This will ensure that everything blends well at the end.
Once you have your mixture prepped, you should begin trowelling it onto the wall. Work from the top to the bottom. You must ensure you achieve an even spread of the joint compound mixture across the wall. Otherwise the overall finish will not be smooth. Once applied, the wall should be left to dry for a few hours or ideally overnight.
Finally, a finishing coat of the joint compound should be applied in a horizontal direction across the wall before being left to dry. If you notice any imperfections, repeat the same steps again until you achieve a smooth finish. Once you are happy with the result, you can apply a finishing coat. When this has dried, the wall is ready for either a finishing coat of paint or wallpaper depending on your design preferences. The result is new smooth walls!
Skim Coating For Commercial Properties
Commercial properties will benefit from skim coatings once in a while. This is due to the fact that commercial buildings usually have bright lighting. Therefore, the light can highlight irregularities in the wall surface, which can jeopardise the aesthetics of your interior. Irregularities are shown much more easily in these properties in comparison to the normal lighting in a domestic property.
